LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) – More resources are on the way for homeless children in Central Arkansas, and those at risk of being homeless.
Wednesday morning, Our House started construction on its new Children’s Center in Little Rock. The non-profit runs the state’s only children’s programs specifically for homeless kids. The center will be 19,000 square feet and allow them to serve 142 children every day at their child development center and out-of-school youth program.
The Children’s Center was designed by Herron Horton Architects and is being built by Nabholz Construction Services. The work was funded in part by the Pulaski County Brownfields Program, which is the only public-sector funding source for the Children’s Center project.
The center will cost around $4.4 million to build and is expected to open by May 1, 2014.
Executive director Georgia Mjartan said the entire purpose of Our House is permanently lifting people out of poverty.
“It will be a space where 90 school age homeless and near homeless children can be any time school is out as well as 50 infants to 5-year-olds who, you know, their parents need to find work, and they can’t do that if they can’t afford childcare,” Mjartan explained.
Our house also works with adults, helping them find housing and employment.
