LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — A single mother in Little Rock got a Christmas gift from a complete stranger that she says will help change her life.
At just 16-years-old, Alishe’ah Sockwell and her daughter were living at the Our House homeless shelter. Thanks to resources made available there, she was able to graduate from high school.
Two years after she began living at Our House, she’s now a volunteer at the shelter through the AmeriCorps program. She also works full time and is getting ready to begin college.
During the shelter’s annual holiday gift drive, Sockwell only listed one request: a laptop she could use for her school work.
She figured her chances of getting such an expensive gift were slim. But this week, she learned she got it.
“Thank you so much,” was Sockwell’s response. “I haven’t had the chance to write a “thank you” letter, but I’m pretty sure it’s going to be an essay, because there are so many things I could say. This really is the best Christmas that I’ve had.”
Our House sponsors donated gifts to 150 families during this year’s drive. Sockwell says she’ll use the laptop this coming fall when she starts classes at UALR. She wants to be a nurse
