James

James had spent nearly ten years working in the Philippines, even meeting his wife there, when he was unable to renew his visa this year. After other housing accommodations fell through, James found himself in Little Rock without a place to stay and heard that he should come to Our House. Within ten days of checking into our Shelter, James started a steady job at 3M working in their granite mine. “All of the tools I needed to look for work were there in the Career Center,” James said. “That was the most helpful part of being here. I didn’t have any means when I arrived here, but in the Career Center everything is available to you from a phone to makes calls to a printer for your resume.”

In only a few months, James has saved enough money working for 3M for all of his travel expenses back to the Philippines where he’ll be applying for permanent residency to be with his family, but he’ll never forget Our House! “I’m amazed at what I was able to accomplish in only ninety days,” James says. “It’s a safe place to come back to at night, and during the day you know your information is safe and your belongings are safe; that makes it easier to go out and apply yourself. This has been more of a home to me than a shelter.”
