Norma grew up one of nine children on a family farm in Sweet Home, Arkansas. In her youth, her focus was on supporting her family’s farming operation and she never graduated from high school. She married young and worked at the local VA as a caregiver for twenty-four years while she raised her family. Once her children were grown, she found herself yearning to focus on herself, her career, and increasing her education. Norma realized that she would need a GED to obtain another caregiver job, so she turned to the Our House Career Center for support. In the Career Center, clients have access to an abundance of workforce training programs, job coaching, and adult education opportunities. Norma started working with our partner, Arkansas Baptist College, which provides adult education services two times a week in the Career Center. Norma is working diligently on preparing for the GED exam and plans to dive into reading more with her great-grandchildren and enjoying her own personal collection of political science books with her improved literacy skills. When she passes her GED test, Norma looks forward to returning to work in the healthcare field with an impeccable resume and new found love for reading!
