LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – New guidelines from the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development say landlords could face lawsuits if they discriminate against renters with a criminal records.

Attorneys representing tenants in central Arkansas say many landlords are not aware of the new guidelines and continue the practice.

HUD specifically calls out policies that disproportionately impact minority communities, more likely to be involved in the criminal justice system.

The guidelines apply to the vast majority of landlords, but there are exceptions for some small operations.

If a landlord is found to have violated the HUD guidelines, they could face fines.
